Neighborhood
Maple Cottage is about 200m from the centre of Bourton-on-the-Water, so you can leave the car on the drive and walk everywhere. The village is known for the River Windrush and its low stone bridges, and most shops, pubs and attractions are a short stroll along the river. Family favourites include the Model Village (a 1:9 replica of Bourton), the Cotswold Motoring Museum (home of Brum), Birdland Park and Gardens with its penguins and flamingos, and the Dragonfly Maze. There are plenty of pubs and restaurants in the village, including the Old Manse, Kingsbridge and the Duke of Wellington by the river, and Smiths for burgers. Hawkstone Brewery is about 10 minutes' walk away. For walkers, Bourton sits where nine waymarked routes meet, including the Windrush Way and Monarch's Way. A popular walk goes to Stow-on-the-Wold via Lower Slaughter, about 4 miles, with a bus back. Stow is a pretty market town with tearooms, galleries and antique shops. Our guidebook has more ideas for places to eat and things to do.
